The price difference is two and a half crore for a car similar to the Land Cruiser, and not only that, the Toyota Land Cruiser is often compared with the Mercedes. The second factor is technology—Mercedes uses a mild hybrid 48-volt battery system, derived from Formula One technology, known as the ISG (Integrated Starter Generator). Additionally, it has a 3-liter engine with better fuel consumption than the Land Cruiser, despite being a petrol engine. The power and horsepower of the Nissan aren’t as impressive.
The Mercedes has a clear advantage. If you like big, bold, and brute vehicles, this one fits the bill. The AMG premium plus package includes AMG-style bumpers, exhaust tips, and 23-inch rims, though 23-inch rims might be too large for some customers. Based on feedback, 20-inch rims have no complaints, while 22-inch rims have few complaints. However, 23-inch rims are often considered too bulky.
Mercedes has thought through the design to give it a more rounded look. This is the S-Class of SUVs, and it needs to look big. Some improvements could be made directly from the factory, like adding privacy glass. The third-row seating offers 835-855 liters of cargo space, which isn’t too bad, though it can be tricky to access. This model is made in the USA, but this specific variation is Australian-spec, which is a nice touch. However, software issues can be annoying—you may have to visit the dealership to fix them, even if they are not your fault. Once out of warranty, these repairs can become costly, not just for this car but for other luxury brands like Range Rover too.
This vehicle features a 362-horsepower engine with 500 Nm of torque, boosted by a 48-volt battery that adds an extra 21 horsepower and 49 Nm of torque, making a total of 749 Nm of torque. The EQ Boost technology, which is derived from Mercedes’ Formula One experience, enables advanced functions like electrically spooling up the turbo.
The 48-volt system allows for features that 12-volt systems can’t handle, like the ability to electrically spool the turbocharger, similar to a supercharger. The ISG system alone adds 22 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Other notable features include a sturdy dual-pin hood absorber, a comfortable leather interior, and real-time adjustments for driving modes like sport and comfort.
Inside, the car has a plush leather interior and features like push-start buttons, auto-stop functions, and even voice-activated commands. For example, you can ask, “Hey Mercedes, turn on the massage,” and it will respond, making long drives much more comfortable. Ambient lighting with multiple color options adds to the luxurious feel. The Australian version also comes with advanced air conditioning systems and a slot for perfume diffusion.
There are 11 USB charging ports, allowing seven passengers to charge their devices simultaneously. Leather seats are of high quality, with real-time temperature controls. Though it’s not designed as a full-on off-road vehicle like the Land Cruiser, the Mercedes can handle moderate off-road conditions.
Driving the GLS 450 offers a smooth experience. In normal driving mode, the car is responsive, but sport mode brings out its full potential, with a nine-speed gearbox that shifts seamlessly. Even with 23-inch rims, the suspension offers a comfortable ride. When fitted with 20-inch rims, the ride is even more comfortable. The third-generation GLS continues to impress, following the GL models that began in 2005.
This car offers a powerful engine with a satisfying growl, supported by top-notch technology like the ISG system and heads-up display. The ride quality is enhanced by various sensors that assist during maneuvers. The resale value is a bit questionable, as with many German luxury cars, but the Mercedes brand retains a premium status.
Braking is effective, though the weight of the car means it takes longer to come to a complete stop. While it’s not a sports car, the GLS 450 provides a luxurious and powerful driving experience. We hope you enjoyed this review of the GLS 450. The next review will be for the Audi Q7, either on my channel or Driven’s channel. Before the new model arrives, we also plan to review the BMW X7. Personally, I prefer the X7 as a better car overall, but Mercedes offers the best interface among the three. Stay tuned for more reviews.
